The “Abortion Pill” FAQs

Get answers to the most frequently asked questions about the “abortion pill”, more accurately called Mifeprex, RU-486, or medication abortion.
The most common medication abortion regimen in the United States involves theuse of two different medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone, sold under the brand name Mifeprex and also known as the abortion pill, RU-486, blocks progesterone, a hormone essential to the development of a pregnancy, and thereby prevents an existing pregnancy from progressing.
In the medication abortion regimen, the first pill, mifepristone, acts as a progesterone blocker. Since progesterone is a necessary hormone for sustaining pregnancy, the uterus becomes inhospitable to pregnancy and the fetus stops developing. The second pill in the regimen, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours after taking mifepristone. This drug causes the uterus to contract and the cervix to soften and dilate, pushing the fetus out.
  • vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • cramps
  • pelvic pain
  • vaginal burning, itching, or discharge
  • headache

Some side effects can be serious. You should also call your doctor immediately or get emergency medical treatment if you have general symptoms of illness such as weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or feeling sick for more than 24 hours after taking mifepristone even if you do not have a fever or pain in the area below your waist.

Make sure that you are in an appropriate location when you take misoprostol because vaginal bleeding, cramps, nausea, and diarrhea usually begins within 2 to 24 hours after taking it but could begin within 2 hours. Vaginal bleeding or spotting usually lasts for 9 to 16 days but can last for 30 days or longer.
According to recent studies, women who take the abortion pill are at a 53% greater risk of an Emergency Room visit for an abortion-related reason compared to ER visits following a surgical type of abortion. The rate of abortion-related ER visits following a medical abortion increased 507% from 2002-2015.
You must go back to your doctor for an exam or ultrasound 7 to 14 days after taking mifepristone to confirm that the pregnancy has ended and to check the amount of bleeding. Take mifepristone exactly as directed.
Regimen costs may vary, but typically start at $450 dollars. Insurance does not typically cover medication or surgical abortion procedures.
Purchasing the abortion pill from an unknown source on the internet is dangerous and could put your health at greater risk. The FDA warns individuals “You should not buy Mifeprex over the internet because you will bypass important safeguards designed to protect your health.”
State laws and gestational age of the fetus may impact medication abortion availability. Before taking a medication abortion regimen, a physical examination and ultrasound should be completed to confirm the viability and location of the pregnancy. Be wary of ordering medications online to be delivered to your home as they may not be FDA approved.

On December 16, 2021, the FDA removed the in-person dispensing requirement for mifepristone and expanded the distribution to certified pharmacies in addition to certified clinicians. Without an ultrasound this can create health complications. Taking the abortion pill when you are too far along, have an ectopic pregnancy, or other medical conditions may cause serious health problems. Schedule your free ultrasound today at First Care. If you’ve taken the first dose of the abortion pill and have changed your mind, it may not be too late to reverse the effects. If progesterone therapy is administered within 72 hours of taking mifepristone, and before taking misoprostol, it is possible to reverse the effects of the abortion. By increasing the amount of progesterone, the fetus has a greater chance of continuing to develop.
“Four of six women who took mifepristone were able to carry their pregnancies to term after receiving intramuscular progesterone 200 mg.”

Progesterone treatments can begin immediately, followed by a limited diagnostic ultrasound within 72 hours of taking mifepristone to confirm fetal viability. If the fetus is still alive, your medical abortion reversal will involve natural progesterone treatments for about two and a half weeks. If you have taken the first pill of the medication abortion regimen and regret it, call First Care now.
