What are sexually transmitted diseases and infections?

STDs are sexually transmitted diseases, while STIs are sexually transmitted infections. They both spread from one person to another during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. In some cases, symptoms do not appear immediately, and some people are asymptomatic. Without treatment, STDs and STIs can impact your health.

STI/STD Testing & Treatment

First Care Women’s Clinic provides free STI/STD testing for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and HIV, if requested. All blood and urine specimens for STI/STD testing are processed by an accredited lab.

Free treatment is provided for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Pregnant women will be referred to their obstetrician for testing. Testing and treatment are available for male partners of women who test positive at First Care. The testing process includes meeting with a trained consultant to discuss risk factors and treatment. You could have a sexually transmitted disease with no noticeable symptoms.

While STI/STD testing is confidential, we are required by law to report positive test results to the Department of Health.

Did You Know?

Sexually active young women should be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year. All women with risk factors, such as new or multiple sex partners, or a sex partner who has an STD, should also be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia every year.
